Overview
The Upper Mustang Trek is one of Nepal’s most mystical and culturally immersive trekking experiences. Often described as a “journey to the last forbidden kingdom,” this trek leads adventurers into a starkly beautiful desert landscape shaped by wind, time, and Tibetan tradition. Hidden beyond the mighty Himalayas in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Upper Mustang was closed to outsiders until 1992—and even today, it requires a special permit to enter.
Upper Mustang lies in the northwestern part of Nepal, bordering Tibet. It falls under the Mustang District of Gandaki Province and is divided into two parts—Lower Mustang (more accessible) and Upper Mustang (restricted). The region is part of the Tibetan plateau, with a dramatic, high-altitude desert landscape, red and ochre cliffs, ancient caves, and deep gorges cut by the Kali Gandaki River.
Most treks to Upper Mustang begin with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, followed by a multi-day hike through remote villages, rugged valleys, and high ridges. The crown jewel of the trek is Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the ancient Kingdom of Mustang. Upper Mustang is culturally and ethnically Tibetan. The region preserves a way of life that’s remained largely untouched for centuries. You’ll encounter Centuries-old monasteries (like Ghar Gompa, built in the 8th century). Tibetan Buddhism and Bon practices. Tiji Festival – a vibrant, three-day ritual celebrated in Lo Manthang in May. Ancient cave systems carved into cliffs (e.g., Chhoser) etc.
The Upper Mustang Trek is not just a trail—it’s a gateway into a preserved world where time slows, prayer flags flutter in the wind, and the mountains whisper stories of centuries past. Whether you’re drawn by the barren beauty, cultural depth, or spiritual stillness, Upper Mustang offers a trekking experience unlike any other in Nepal.
